South Korea’s e-commerce platforms are enjoying a sharp surge in the sales of fashion items including jackets and sweaters worn by characters in popular Korean dramas.
According to online retail platform SSG.com Corp., sales of women’s tweed jackets jumped 25 percent year-on-year over the period between Feb. 8 and March 9. The stylish jackets were worn by Korean actress Lim Ji-yeon who played the role of a weather forecaster Park Yeon-jin in the Netflix series, “The Glory.”
The character wore many tweed jackets and other bright color suits.
“Demand for spring fashion items is on a rise overall as the weather gets warmer,” said an unnamed official from Gmarket. “Consumers are highly interested in the items drama characters wear.”
“Crash Course in Romance,” a tvN drama whose last episode was released recently, is another show that is setting the latest fashion trends.
Nam Haeng-seon, played by veteran actress Jeon Do-yeon, is a strong and sweet woman that runs a small food takeaway store. She dressed up in flower print blouses, frilled knitwear, and polka-dot puffer coats.
Gmarket sales data showed that sales of retro fashion items soared during the same period, with sales of blouses with lace and frills jumping 67 percent, chiffon blouses 62 percent, and printed blouses 92 percent.
SSG.com also saw patterned and print blouse sales rise 20 percent, jeans 15 percent, and lace and frill blouses 10 percent.
