Samsung Electronics Co. has unveiled SSD 980 PRO, a new consumer-use PCIe 4.0 NVMe solid state drive (SSD) designed for data-intensive works and graphic-heavy games.

The South Korean memory chip giant will roll out SSD 980 PRO worldwide this month, according to its press release on Tuesday.

Samsung SSD 980 PRO, completely designed in-house, is two times faster than PCIe 3.0 SSDs and up to 12.7 times faster than SATA SSDs, making it ideal for consumer working with 4K and 8K contents and play graphic-heavy games, said the company. The new SSD provides sequential read and write speeds of up to 7,000 megabyte per second (MB/s) and 5,000 MB/s, respectively, as well as random read and write speeds of 1,000K input/output operations per second (IOPS).

The new SSD also offers improved reliability through upgraded thermal control solutions. The company said SSD 980 PRO uses nickel coating on the controller and a heat spreader label on the back side for efficient thermal management, allowing the drive¡¯s to minimize heat-caused performance fluctuations over long hauls.

The new PCIe 4.0 NVMe SSD will come in 1 terabyte (TB), 500 gigabyte (GB) and 250 GB models, with 2TB model to be added by the end of this year. The price is suggested at $88.99 for the 250 GB model, according to the company.

¡°Over the years, Samsung has continuously challenged the limits of high-speed flash memory storage solutions,¡± said Dr. Mike Mang, vice president of Memory Brand Product Business at Samsung Electronics. ¡°The new 980 PRO SSD reflects our continuing commitment to delivering exceptional products consumers have come to expect from Samsung.¡±

On Wednesday, Samsung Electronics shares ended up 0.69 percent at 58,600 won ($50.32) in Seoul.
