Samsung Electronics Co. has decided to equip about 100 million Galaxy mobile devices with the Galaxy artificial intelligence (AI) in 2024, a move that will help the South Korean tech giant take the lead in the era of mobile AI.

¡°The Galaxy AI in the Galaxy S24 series advocates Hybrid AI, which uses on-device and cloud-based AI technologies appropriately,¡± according to Roh Tae-moon, president and head of the mobile experience (MX) business at Samsung Electronics. ¡°We will expand the application of the Galaxy AI in flagship products such as the Galaxy S23, Z Flip/Fold, and Tab S9 via software updates in the first half of the year.¡±

The remarks were made during a press conference held after the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2024 event in San Jose, the United States, on Wednesday. Roh noted that the AI phone with the Galaxy S24 is just the beginning, and significant changes surpassing the ¡°internet begins here.¡±

His comments reflect Samsung Electronics¡¯ determination to lead the AI phone era by incorporating Galaxy AI into major products released in 2023 in addition to the world¡¯s first AI phone, the Galaxy S24, unveiled on Wednesday. The company aims to make Galaxy AI services available on more than 100 million products globally in 2024.

Apple Inc., Samsung Electronics¡¯ biggest competitor, has not yet incorporated generative AI into its iPhone, with the industry expecting it to be revealed at Apple¡¯s developer event in June 2024 at the earliest. Samsung Electronics is hoping to get a head start in tapping the market and leading the new era of mobile AI.

Google LLC senior vice president Hiroshi Lockheimer also attended the Galaxy Unpacked event, highlighting the alliance between Samsung Electronics and Google, where he said generative AI models will be integrated into the new Galaxy S24 via Google Cloud. The two companies introduced new search features such as Circle to Search in addition to AI.

Samsung Electronics also unveiled its new healthcare device, the Galaxy Ring, on Wednesday. The device can be worn 24 hours a day, unlike a watch, and is scheduled to be released later in 2024.
