South Korea¡¯s LG Chem gas added phenol and acetone to its list of upcycled products for exports.
The chemical unit under LG Group announced on Thursday that it would ship phenol and acetone made from recycled resources, such as waste cooking oils for the first time.
LG obtained International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) Plus for those eco-friendly products. ISCC Plus is an international certification system consistent with the world¡¯s most stringent Renewable Energy Directives and is a representative method of proving the sustainability of eco-friendly bioproducts.
Its first shipments of 5,200 tons, including 4,000 tons of phenol and 1,200 tons of acetone, will be delivered to a German chemical firm¡¯s production facilities in Thailand and China from July to August. The volume is the largest ever of ISCC Plus certified products by a Korean firm.
Phenol is the source material for polycarbonate, a high-performance plastic used to make auto parts. The resin produced from phenol is also used to make electrical and electronic parts and insulation materials. Acetone is used to make detergents and paint thinners. It is also used for building materials such as artificial marble.
LG Chem has launched 41 products certified for ISCC Plus, including super absorbent polymer (SAP), polyolefin (PO), and polycarbonate (PC) since exporting the bio-balanced SAP for the first time in August last year.
Its shares rose 5 percent to 567,000 won ($431.51) in the early trading on Thursday.
