South Korea’s entertainment giant CJ ENM Co. will be able to produce TV series and films with more rich and sophisticated visual effects thanks to a virtual production studio that will be built with Samsung Electronics Co.’s latest micro-LED technology later this year.

CJ ENM said on Monday that it will build one of production studios in Paju, Gyeonggi Province, as a virtual production studio and install Samsung Electronics’ micro-LED panel The Wall as the massive digital canvas for the virtual production studio with an aim to complete construction within this year. CJ ENM is currently building a total 13 content studios including the virtual studio at a land of 212,883 square meters (2,291,453.54 square feet).

A virtual production studio is a production facility in which the entire set is created on large-size LED screens. Global film producers have been actively using a virtual production studio to create more authentic looking visual effects for their content. Disney+ filmed The Mandalorian that won Emmy Award for Outstanding Special Visual Effects last year at a virtual studio, while Netflix’s Midnight Sky and HBO’s Westworld also actively used virtual production solutions.

“This partnership will allow CJ ENM to push forward the creation of a new powerhouse of the next-generation content,” Ho-sung Kang, CJ ENM CEO, said in a statement.

The main LED Wall in the new virtual studio will be 20 meters in diameter and 7 meters high, the biggest of its kind in Korea, and the world’s first LED wall that uses micro-LED display technology.

The virtual production studio to be fitted with the state-of-art display technology and virtual production solutions is expected to help CJ ENM significantly slash on-location production costs, as well as production period and working time. It is also expected to speed up the company’s creation of content with the latest virtual reality technologies such as metaverse and virtual or augmented reality.
