Samsung Electronics Co. on Monday has launched industry¡¯s first 24G Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) interface solid state drive (SSD) for enterprise servers based on sixth-generation 128-layer vertical NAND.
With the latest 24G SAS (SAS-4) interface, the drive is able to support twice higher speed of 22.5Gbps, compared to the previous SAS-3 interface.
The new PM1653 drive has been optimized for high-performance enterprise servers. It offers the industry¡¯s highest random read speed of 800K IOPS, which is a key metric for server storage performance.
The sequential read speed also is available at 4,300 MB/s, nearly doubling the speed of the predecessor.
The drive is capable of supporting both SAS-4 and SAS-3 platforms.
To better meet customers¡¯ demand, various storage capacity versions will be available from 800GB to 30.72TB.
Samsung Electronics dominates a 36.5 percent share in the enterprise server SSD market as of last year. Its market share hovered above 40 percent in the latter half of 2020.
Server SSD market is estimated to grow by an average 8.7 percent per year to $26 billion in 2020-2025, according to London-based market research firm Omdia.
Samsung Electronics has partnered with U.S. host bus adapter (HBA) major Broadcom to ensure timely transition to the SAS milestone.
¡°Samsung enterprise solutions are also accredited by the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology for the most powerful data security,¡± said Park Kwang-il, senior vice president of memory product planning division at Samsung Electronics. ¡°Like we have done with the PM1653, Samsung will continue to collaborate with our customers to accommodate the ever-growing demand of the enterprise server market for the most uncompromising offerings available.¡±
