Emerging YouTubers in Korea: 70% male in their 20s to 30s

Male Koreans in late 20s to mid 30s are most successful in YouTubing, a survey by Maeil Business Newspaper and Maekyung Biz showed.

About 24.3 percent out of 244 YouTubers under survey had 100,000-300,000 subscribers to their YouTube channels. Another 20.6 percent have 10,000 to 30,000 subscribers, 6.2 percent with 300,000 to 500,000, 4.1 percent with 500,000 to 1 million subscribers. Eight had more than 1 million subscribers.

The YouTubers on average ran channels for less than two years ago, with 93, followed by 78 with a channel operated less than three years, 46 less than 1 year and 24 less than six months.

Education was the top topic with 42 engaged.

The second-most favorite theme was 29 on people or blogs, 25 on lifestyle, 20 on entertainment, 15 on automobiles, 15 on sports, 11 on science and technology, 10 on travel and event, 9 on movie and animation and 9 on comedy.

Most of them, 77 YouTubers earn less than 1 million won ($837.7) per month from their channels, but nine said they rake in more than 20 million won a month. Forty-one make 2 million won to 5 million won per month on YouTube, 19 take home 5 million won to 10 million won and 17 earn 10 million won to 20 million won.

Those who surveyed said they focus on honesty and providing specific knowledge and information while creating their contents, as well as uploading videos on schedule, creating attractive content and characters and offering detailed explanation.

Most of them say news or media advertisement or promotion would greatly help them attract more subscribers. A majority of 73.6 percent said they have never run an advertisement to promote their channel but 85.9 percent said they would be able to draw more viewers if their content is picked as the weekly best video by Maeil Business Newspaper or other media.
