Kim Sang-jo, policy chief for President Moon Jae-in, met with heads of the country¡¯s top internet and telecom companies to discuss Digital New Deal projects.

Kim had a closed-door meeting with five corporate chief executive officers – Koo Hyun-mo of KT Corp., Park Jung-ho of SK Telecom Co., Ha Hyun-hwoi of LG Uplus Corp., Han Seong-sook of Naver Corp., and Yeo Min-soo of Kakao Corp. – on Thursday.

¡°I had asked their cooperation on creating a dynamic digital ecosystem that can present greater opportunities for young people,¡± Kim told the press after his meeting with the corporate chiefs.

He said discussions on cooperation for state¡¯s ¡°digital new deal¡± initiative were also made.

The Korean government¡¯s five-year digital new deal initiative is to foster economic recovery from the coronavirus-caused recession and build new growth momentum through digitization projects.

For the digital new deal project, the government has earmarked 2.7 trillion won ($2.3 billion) this year, which will be spent on strengthening competency in key technologies like 5G network, big data analysis and artificial intelligence. The state¡¯s plan also includes digitalizing social overhead capital.
