Seoul will campaign to host the 2032 Summer Olympics jointly with North Korea`s capital Pyongyang, according to the Korean Olympic Committee on Monday.
Seoul won 34 out of the 49 votes, elbowing out the southern port city of Busan which proposed joint hosting with the capital city.
Talks of the two Koreas co-hosting the 2032 Summer Olympics first came up after the inter-Korean summit in September 2018. Officials of both countries have since met up twice to outline a plan for the joint bid.
Seoul, which had hosted the 1988 Summer Olympics, revealed its intent to mount a joint bid with Pyongyang since late last year. Busan jumped in later in the game, passing the Busan-Pyongyang Olympics resolution in the city council just last month.
The proposal would first need to be reviewed and approved by South Korea’s Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Do Jong-hwan, South Korea’s culture minister, is expected to submit the formal bid with his North Korean counterpart to the International Olympic Committee on Friday.
The two Koreas are reportedly up against Germany, China, Australia, India and Indonesia.
