Samsung Electronics Co. has sold 5.4 million units of quantum-dot based QLED TVs this year, outperforming its annual target as its TVs were swept up during the Black Friday blowout. The company expects to double sales to 10 million units next year.

According to industry sources on Tuesday, Samsung Electronics this year is estimated to have sold a total of 5.4 million units of QLED TVs in the global market – 896,000 units in the first quarter, 1.09 million units in the second quarter, 1.16 million units in the third quarter, and 2.25 million units in the fourth quarter.

Half-year sales in the first six months more than doubled from a year ago, and so did quarterly sales in the final quarter thanks to the Black Friday bonanza. Samsung QLED TVs sold 290,000 units in the U.S. and Europe in just a week on Nov. 25-Dec. 1.

Market analysts now are raising expectations that its QLED TV shipments next year would jump to 10 million units with expanded product lineups including super-size screens.

The Korean tech giant has been active in marketing premium TVs, which helps it claim a 30 percent share in the global TV market.

In the premium TV market with a price tag of over $2,500, Samsung Electronics has kept its lead with a 50.5 percent in the first nine months. It claims a 50.7 percent share in the market of super-size TVs featuring 75-inch or larger screens, and 87.9 percent in the 8K TV market.

Demand for super-size TVs is rising fast despite the hefty prices. Samsung 8K QLED TVs sold more than 200 units in 95-inch size this year, which is priced at 77 million won ($66,072) in Korea.

The average TV panel size is estimated to expand to 48.3-inch in 2023 from 42.7-inch in 2017, according to estimates by global market research firm IHS Markit.
