Naver Labs Corp., R&D subsidiary of South Korea¡¯s leading online portal operator Naver Corp. has joined hands with global mapping and location data service provider HERE Technologies to develop automatic indoor mapping solution.

Naver Labs said Tuesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with HERE Technologies to cooperate on developing an indoor mapping system that automatically updates latest changes in the area using artificial intelligence technologies. HERE Technologies, which offers mapping and navigation services to individuals and companies around the world, lately has been focusing its efforts to publish maps for indoor spaces.

Under the deal, two firms will create an automatic indoor mapping system that creates 3D indoor map via a robot equipped with a laser scanner and high-performance camera then automatically updates changes in the area detected through autonomous robots using the Korean company¡¯s scalable & semantic indoor mapping technology.

Naver Labs¡¯s indigenous scalable & semantic indoor mapping technology is a mapping solution built on semantic technology, a way to process data to discover relationships within varied data sets. The company believes its new mapping technology can significantly cut costs and time of conventional indoor mapping method that depends heavily on humans.
