South Korea‘s science and defense ministries announced a collaboration to bolster the development of cutting-edge defense innovations and build stronger military. The latest collaboration, which began with a memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed on Tuesday, will focus on advanced technologies, particularly in areas including aerospace.

Under the agreement, the Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT) and the Military of Defense will intensify their cooperation in military technology, with a particular emphasis on tech fields crucial for future warfare, including artificial intelligence (AI), semiconductors, and cybersecurity.

As one of the key initiatives announced by the agreement, the two sides will promote efforts to build tech-based military capabilities. This includes the joint research and development of military technology between the industry and the military, which involves tapping into industrial advancements for defense projects to foster all-purpose technologies.

The two government agencies will also run a ministerial-level commission to ensure effective coordination, with the body expected to hold its first meeting in the latter part of the first half of 2024.

The MSIT has also signed an MOU with the Public Procurement Service as part of its effort to build more efficient national procurement practices in tech fields.
