S. Korean govt teams up with shipbuilders to put all-electric ferry on waters by 2024

South Korea this week will kick off a public-private project to put an all-electric car ferry on waters by 2024.

The Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries will be working with local shipbuilders, industry specialists and other state authorities to develop electric-powered ferries for carrying passengers and cargoes. The maritime ministry plans to invest 45 billion won ($36.8 million) on the project to develop and test run all-electric car ferries by 2024.

The ministry will hold its first collaborative council with its partners from the public and private sectors on Wednesday. Total 16 parties including South Jeolla provincial government, Samsung Heavy Industries will take part in the meeting, where they will discuss policies needed for supporting development of mobile electric battery system for powering ships. They will also discuss the scope of their collaboration.
