A 10 Giga Internet service, which is up to 10 times faster than the current market standard, is expected to become available in nearly a quarter of cities across South Korea.
The Ministry of Science and ICT set target coverage of super-speed Internet service in major cities at 24 percent, up 1.5 times from this year¡¯s target of 16 percent.
The 10 Giga Internet service is designed to facilitate high-capacity and high-quality data transmission, accommodating 5G communication, ultra-high definition, augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications.

The ministry has carried out the 10 Giga Internet service project with the National Information Society Agency (NIA) since 2018 and the service coverage in 85 major cities nationwide reached 8.04 percent last year. In April, the SK Broadband-KT consortium was selected to implement the project.
The companies invested 45 billion won ($40.4 million) in the project to improve infrastructure, develop 5G media content solutions and explore related service models.

LG Uplus, another mobile carrier, nearly double the value of 10 Giga home service equipment contracts with local equipment vendors in June. LG Uplus plans to spend 90 billion won buying equipment each year until 2023.
The ministry also decided to increase the penetration rate of domestic equipment related to the 10 Giga Internet subscriber network to 50 percent, up about 1.5 times from 33.7 percent last year.
