South Korea starts test on self-driving public transportation, delivery in Seoul and 5 others

The South Korean government designated six regions – Seoul, North Chungcheong Province, Sejong, Gwangju, Daegu and Jeju – as autonomous driving test areas to accelerate realization of of self-driving public transportation and delivery services.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport announced Sunday that it selected the six regions as regulation-free special zones to allow private companies to test their self-driving cars for various businesses including unmanned shuttle bus, taxi and robot delivery.

In Seoul, self-driving shuttle buses will be travel on a 6.2-square-kilometer area in Sangam near Digital Media City subway station.

North Chungcheong Province and Sejong will operate a bus rapid transit (BRT) shuttle on a 22.4-kilometer road between Osong station and Sejong Terminal. Sejong will separately test a demand responsive transport (DRT)-based circulation shuttle bus to and from Sejong Government Complex.

Gwangju will test-run an autonomous road cleaning car and garbage truck and Daegu will test shuttle bus and DRT tax services. Jeju will operate a self-driving shuttle bas between the Jeju International Airport and Jungmun Tourism Complex.
