Naver’s CHZZK overtakes afreecaTV in mobile app user rankings

CHZZK, Naver Corp.’s game streaming platform launched last year, has clinched the top spot in mobile app user rankings, surpassing afreecaTV for the first time, data showed Tuesday.

According to Wiseapp Retail Goods, a mobile app analytics service, CHZZK recorded 2.16 million users in South Korea in March, surpassing afreecaTV’s 1.96 million users.

CHZZK’s user base has been steadily increasing since its launch, growing nearly twice in just three months from 1.11 million users.

CHZZK’s rise to the top spot is attributed to a mass migration of users from the global game streaming company Twitch, which withdrew from the Korean market on February 27.

However, despite its impressive user acquisition, afreecaTV still maintains dominance in terms of mobile app usage time.

Last month, afreecaTV recorded a usage time of 710 million minutes, nearly double that of CHZZK’s 360 million minutes.

Moreover, the average time spent per user on afreecaTV was more than double that of CHZZK, with afreecaTV users spending an average of 6 hours and 2 minutes compared to CHZZK’s 2 hours and 49 minutes.

The afreecaTV operator recently changed its corporate name to SOOP and plans to rename its service in the third quarter of this year to align with its new corporate identity.

SOOP posted a record-high revenue of 347.6 billion won ($257 million) in 2023, up 10.4 percent from the previous year, and an operating profit of 90.3 billion won, up 9.6 percent.
