Manager-level employees and executives at Samsung Electronics Co. are now being called by their English names or initials as the company has banned the use of work titles also in the higher ranks from this month to create a horizontal work culture.
Samsung Electronics¡¯ Device eXperience (DX) division notified a horizontal work title guideline for the management and executives to employees on Wednesday. Under the guideline, work titles have been banned and instead executives should be called by their English names, initials, or adding the suffix ¡°nim¡± to their Korean names.
The company¡¯s vice chairman Han Jong-hee, for example, is called by his initial ¡°JH.¡±
The move is part of Samsung Electronics¡¯ efforts to create a more horizontal work culture by taking out work titles. Employees¡¯ work titles have already been unified to ¡°pro¡± last year.
A chief executive officer named Hong Gil-dong is now addressed as ¡°GD¡± or ¡°Gil-dong nim.¡±
According to the guideline, everyone at Samsung Electronics should share their name preferences with their team members.
The simplified titles should be used in all parts of the workplace, such as at townhall meetings and seminars. Heads of teams, groups, parts, and labs should also not use their job titles. Employees, in the meantime, will continue to address themselves and others as ¡°nim¡± or ¡°pro nim.¡±
