South Korea’s DL E&C and SK ecoplant won the European Steel Bridge Award from the European Convention for Construction Steelwork (ECCS) for their 1915 Çanakkale Bridge project, the longest span suspension bridge connecting Europe and Turkey.

The ECCS selects winners for the European Steel Bridge Awards every two years among European bridge construction projects. The 2022 ceremony was held in Istanbul, Turkey, last Thursday. The South Korean firms defeated 20 candidates for the top prize.

The 1915 Çanakkale Bridge, connecting Europe with Asia, was completed in 48 months after construction launch in April 2018. It is the world’s largest span suspension bridge, with a total length of 3,563 meters. DL E&C and SK ecoplant built the world’s highest central tower of 335 meters and applied state-of-the-art engineering techniques, such as ultra-high-strength wires and extra-large anchorages. “Our technological prowess is highly recognized through the 1915 Çanakkale Bridge project. We will continuously move forward for global construction projects,” said an official from DL E&C.

DL E&C and SK ecoplant signed for the project based on the build-operate-transfer (BOT) terms. The two firms will be in charge of the operation for 12 years after constructing access roads to the bridge. Then they will transfer it to the Turkish government.
