Autonomous navigation solutions provider Avikus under HD Hyundai, the holding entity of the world¡¯s biggest shipbuilding group, has succeeded in commercializing the industry¡¯s first phase 2 autonomous navigation solution for commercial vessels.

Avikus said on Tuesday it has won fresh contracts for outfitting large vessels from SK Shipping and Sinokor Merchant Marine with its Hyundai Intelligent Navigation Assistant System (HiNAS) 2.0.

HiNAS is a computer vision and AI-based system for safe vessel navigation and HiNAS 2.0 is a phase 2 autonomous navigation solution with autonomous control technology added to the previous version. `HiNAS 1.0` developed and commercialized by Avikus in 2020.

The new smart ship management system will be installed sequentially from August next year on a total of 23 container ships and liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers owned by the two shipping companies.

HiNAS 2.0 uses deep learning technology to determine and alert sailors of potential collisions with nearby ships. In addition, it helps minimize fuel consumption by creating an optimal route based on accumulated navigation data and allowing the ship to control engine output autonomously.

According to Acute Market Reports, the market for autonomously operated ships and related equipment is expected to grow at an average annual rate of 12.6 percent, reaching $235.7 billion in 2028.
