South Korea¡¯s Hanwha Aerospace Co. became the first partner of Rolls-Royce to take on the quality assurance tasks previously carried out by the U.K. aircraft engine maker.
The aviation and defense unit of Korean conglomerate Hanwha Group said Tuesday it obtained authorization from Rolls-Royce to review and conduct its own quality inspection of Rolls-Royce¡¯s new engine parts before mass production.
Hanwha Aerospace said the decision came after it was given PPAP grade 1, the highest among Rolls-Royce¡¯s partners.
The new grading would be applied to our operations in Changwon, Korea as well as in Vietnam, the company added.
¡°This was made possible because of our 40 years of accumulated manufacturing knowhow and quality excellence,¡± said Nam Hyung-wook, head of Hanwha Aerospace¡¯s Changwon unit.
Hanwha Aerospace has been working closely with Rolls-Royce since 1984 in military engine maintenance. The Korean company has manufactured cases and modules for various Rolls-Royce engines including Trent, its high-bypass turbonfan line. It won Rolls-Royce¡¯s Best Partner Award in 2018 and struck a $1 billion deal in 2019 to supply aircraft engine parts.
