Doosan Bobcat Inc., a construction equipment unit of South Korean conglomerate Doosan Group, is set to expand one of its U.S. plants starting July to meet growing demands for grounds maintenance equipment (GME).

Doosan Bobcat will scale up its Statesville manufacturing facility in North Carolina, U.S. which produces portable power equipment and compact tractors for completion by May 2022, the company said Tuesday.

Last month, Doosan Bobcat completed the $26 million expansion of another U.S. plant in Litchfield, Minnesota.

The company plans to spend $70 million for the ramp-up including investment in R&D.

The expansion is aimed at beefing up production capacity to meet soaring demands for GME products. Sales of GME, including the latest models of compact tractors and ride-on mowers released last year, reached $327 million in 2020, nearly doubling from $165 million in 2019, it said.

The construction machinery maker is also accelerating its foray in the European market by bolstering product lineup. After launching a compact wheel loader earlier this year, it has recently released a small articulated loader in the region.
