South Korea¡¯s Samsung Electronics Co. on Wednesday named the world¡¯s renowned artificial intelligence (AI) expert as head of its research arm in a bid to strengthen its AI competence in the fourth industrial revolution era.
The Korean tech giant said on Wednesday that it promoted Dr. Sebastian Seung, professor at the Princeton Neuroscience Institute and Department of Computer Science who has also been doubling as chief research scientist at Samsung Research since 2018, to head its research unit.
As head and president of the research unit, Dr. Seung will oversee research and development of future new technologies and convergence technologies at Samsung Electronics¡¯ 15 research and development centers and seven AI centers in 13 countries including Korea.
The latest recruit underscores Samsung Electronics¡¯ strong will to enhance its AI competence, which is considered as a key technology in the era of the fourth industrial revolution.
Dr. Seung is the world¡¯s renowned Korean-American scholar and pioneer in the area of brain-based AI research. As chief research scientist at Samsung Research since 2018, he has provided consultation on Samsung Electronics¡¯ AI strategy and advanced research and helped the company set up global AI centers and hire AI talents across the world.
Of more than 1,000 executives at Samsung Electronics, only 14 hold president title, which makes the latest recruit even more unprecedented.
Samsung Electronics expected that Seung will help enhance the company¡¯s open innovation initiative with world-class researchers based on his experience in academia, outstanding research capability, and extensive research institution network.
