South Korea¡¯s leading cable manufacturer LS Cable & System Ltd. has won a contract to install optical fiber communication network in eastern Nepal from the country¡¯s state-run Nepal Telecom, the Korean company said Thursday.

The latest order was placed as part of the Nepal government¡¯s 200 billion won ($166 million) project for the next three years to improve the country¡¯s poor information and communication infrastructure.

Exact financial terms were not disclosed, but markets expect LS C&S would be able to take home tens of billions won.

Nepal has 1.5 times bigger land area than South Korea, but is located at an average altitude of 1,000 meters, making it hard to establish the communication network. LS C&S successfully won the project after beating out Chinese and Indian rivals, based on its tailored planning and product design to the environment, superior construction capability and price competitiveness, the company explained.

LS C&S has been eager to expand its communications cable business overseas. It has ramped up its fiber-optic cable production lines in Vietnam recently and opened a factory to build EV vehicle battery parts and fiber-optic cables in Poland in May in hopes to make headway into the burgeoning European cable market.

¡°We will focus on high value-added products tailored to each market and make efforts to become a communications network builder, not just a cable supplier,¡± said Myung Roe-hyun, chief executive of LS C&S.
