South Korea¡¯s auto giant Hyundai Motor Co. has developed low frequency wireless charging system for electric vehicles (EVs) available for both short- and mid-range charging, both it hopes to receive international standard certification for headway in the EV global race.

The automaker held a conference on standardization of EV wireless charging for International Organization for Standardization (ISO) from Tuesday to Friday at Hyundai Motor Studio in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. The conference, attended by more than 20 experts from the company and around the world including the U.S., Germany and Japan, was aimed to establish standards for EV wireless charging technology using magnetic field.

The company unveiled its location alignment technology based on low frequency antenna, which allows a vehicle to be parked at the precise location for wireless charging by identifying distance between the car and charging station.

Hyundai Motor said its technology works for mid-range of up to 5 meters. It is also relatively cheap to develop the technology as it uses the same low frequency antenna applied to smart key system, according to the company.

If the technology is certified by the ISO as international standards, it would boost its bottom line as it could receive royalty fees from others, it said.

The global EV market is estimated to grow from 690,000 units in 2017 to 1.42 million this year, but the industry still does not have any standards for wireless charging technology.

¡°Global automakers would fiercely compete to receive certification for international standards,¡± an official from the company said. ¡°We will work hard to win the competition and allow customers to use EVs more conveniently.¡±
