Hyundai Mobis Co., the auto parts unit under South Korea¡¯s largest auto conglomerate Hyundai Motor Group, will ride on KT Corp. to leverage its 5G network for connected car technologies.

Tech and mobility companies have been busy forming alliance with local wireless carriers that have become the first in the world to start 5G commercial service that can enable more security in automation and digitalization.

KT set up a 5G network at Hyundai Mobis¡¯s test driving center in Seosan, South Chungcheong Province, and the two companies plan to use it for development of cellular vehicle-to-everything (C-V2X) technology and real-time updates of navigation software in the second half of this year.

The C-V2X technology is essential for safer autonomous driving as it enables vehicles to connect to everything - other vehicles, network, infrastructure and pedestrian.

KT will be in charge of road, traffic and geographic data transmission by using its 5G infrastructure, and Hyundai Mobis will design the in-vehicle control/sensor system.

For real-time navigation updates, which would become tens of times faster in 5G network, KT will connect in-vehicle 5G device to base stations. Hyundai Mobis will collect traffic information with sensors for transmission to servers.
