Korean auto giant Hyundai Motor Co. and its sibling Kia Motors Corp. will fit their cars with smart automotive air purification system that monitors and cleans air inside automatically.

The companies said Thursday that they have developed a smart automotive air purification system designed to monitor the fine dust level in real time and automatically run air filters to keep the air inside a car fresh and healthy. They plan to sequentially apply the system to their new cars.

The smart air purification system not only automatically cleans air but also closes widows if left open when the system is activated to lower the fine dust level inside the car, said the carmakers.

The fine dust level inside a car will be measured by a laser sensor that the automakers developed in-house as conventional sensors used in residential-use air purifiers are not suited for cars, they said.

The laser-based sensor designed specifically to monitor fine dust level for cars are developed does not require cleaning by the car owner and withstands extreme weather conditions, according to the automakers.
