South Korea¡¯s SK Telecom will widen the scope of cooperation with Microsoft to combine its 5G network and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies with cloud computing and AI from the American partner to take leadership in new business development in a fiercely contested 5G market, the country¡¯s top mobile carrier said Monday.
The two companies recently signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to carry out their comprehensive strategic partnership program dubbed the Joint Innovation Program designed to explore new and innovative business opportunities in various areas, including smart factories in the internet of things (IoT) sector.
The duo already signed a business partnership last February to carry out the development and updates of SK Telecom¡¯s big data system Metatron on Microsoft¡¯s cloud platform Azure.
The two will further expand their cooperation to more diverse IoT areas by combining the Azure platform with SK Telecom¡¯s smart factory business.
In the AI platform sector, the two companies will push to develop new products and services by combining SK Telecom`s AI platform NUGU and Microsoft`s counterpart platform Cortana.
SK Telecom said talks are underway with Microsoft to explore new business opportunities also in the area of media and entertainment by brining 5G network technologies to Microsoft¡¯s game content.
