Choi Jeong-woo, chief executive of South Korea¡¯s largest steelmaker Posco, was appointed as a new member to the Executive Committee of the World Steel Association (worldsteel).
The board of directors at worldsteel met for their annual meeting at Madrid, Spain on Tuesday and named Choi as a newcomer to the 13-membered Executive Committee. Members serve a three-year term.
Founded in 1967, worldsteel represents 160 steel producers and related organizations, including nine of the world¡¯s 10 largest steel companies. The Brussels-based entity is one of the biggest industry associations in the world, with its members accounting for 85 percent of global steel production.
The Executive Committee is worldsteel¡¯s top decision-making body that is responsible for major decisions regarding the steel industry, such as development of new products and technology, industry promotion and environmental protection. The main agendas of the latest board meeting included the short-term outlook for global steel demand, low-emission steel production and sustainable development.
Members of the Executive Committee have the right to appoint the chairman and are eligible to become worldsteel¡¯s head after one year of serving as the vice chair. The top post has been held by three former Posco chiefs: Kim Man-je in 1996, Lee Gu-taek in 2007 and Chung Joon-yang in 2013. The latest Posco CEO, Kwon Oh-joon, served as vice chairman in 2017.
Separately, Kim Yong-tae from Posco won worldsteel¡¯s 13th steelChallenge in the industry category. Contestants from both industry and student categories were tasked with producing a specific engineering steel grade at the lowest cost using steeluniversity¡¯s Basic Oxygen Steelmaking and Secondary Steelmaking simulators.
Kim rose to the finals as the Asian winner of the regional championship in November 2018 and ultimately clinched the top award, beating out the other four regional champions.
Posco won the global challenge in 2006 as a team. It is its first win since competition rules became individual-based in 2014.
