Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) has completed its first LNG carrier equipped with a full reliquefication system to ensure zero waste on LNG.
The South Korean shipbuilder announced on Thursday it delivered the world¡¯s first LNG carrier equipped with the Methane Refrigeration System-Full Reliquefaction (MRS-F) technology to Mitsui O.S.K Lines (MOL), Japan¡¯s leading shipping firm.
MRS-F works with a low-pressure and high-efficiency Generation X dual-fuel (X-DF) engine to reliquefy surplus boil off gas and returns it as LNG to the cargo tank.
The new LNG carrier is a hybrid equipped with the X-DF engine fueled by LNG and heavy fuel oil and the reliquefaction on this vessel is the first of its kind in the world.
MRS-F systems enable reductions in operating costs. The ship owner can save up to 10 billion won ($8.89 million) a year from the waste of LNG, DSME claimed.
DSME has developed the reliquefication system in the early 2000s and now maintains technology leadership in multiple LNG-related energy systems.
