Hyundai Mobis on Wednesday revealed an automated valet parking (AVP) technology that it will complete this year enabling a car to find and park in an appropriate parking space by itself at the CES 2018.

AVP is an advanced version of Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPA), which Hyundai Mobis aims to apply to cars rolling out from early this year. The car with RSPA is activated on a smart key button release by the driver outside the car to park automatically using ultrasound sensors. But this technology is available only when an open parking space is provided beforehand.

In contrast, AVP enables the car to find an empty parking space and drive itself toward it without any human intervention. This high-level automated driving is backed by ultrasound, camera, LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), high-precision map and communication functions.

Hyundai Mobis also said it will develop e-Corner technology by 2021 to enable a motor-mediated control of each wheel.

Hyundai Mobis will jack up its R&D spending to 10 percent out of revenue by 2021 from the current 7 percent to pioneer the development of self-driving technology, according to a company official.
