South Korean game developer Netmarble Corp. launched a labor union, joining other players amid the ongoing workforce restructuring in the wake of dismal earnings.

The Korean Chemical, Textile & Food Workers‘ Union, an industry-wide trade union affiliated with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), announced the official inauguration of a labor union at Netmarble on Tuesday.

The union is the seventh of its kind formed in the local game industry, following Nexon Co., Smilegate Group, XLGames, WEBZEN Inc., NCSOFT Corp, and NHN Corp.

In its founding declaration, the union noted that Netmarble is undergoing restructuring that has been less known to the public. The work has resulted in massive layoffs, including hundreds of workers, and shutdowns of subsidiaries over the past two years.

The union demanded fair incentive policies, salary raises, and other forms of compensation.

Industry observers say that the establishment of a labor union at Netmarble was inevitable, given the company’s recent rapid downsizing.

Netmarble has turned to significant restructuring of its non-core business, with serial shutdowns of games that generated poor sales last year.

Forming a trade union is a right of employees that must be protected by the country‘s labor law, said an official from Netmarble, noting that the company respects the voluntary choice of its employees.

The company pledged to work together with the union to create a reliable work environment.
