LCT Hospital, a Suwon-based orthopedic surgery hospital, has come under limelight for impressive patient outcomes in the employment of self-developed joint surgery robot Dr. LCT at the 2022 International Society for Technology in Arthroplasty (ISTA) Conference held in Hawaii on Aug. 31-Sept. 3.

In the presentation entitled “The Newly Developed Robot Arthroplasty System - Dr. LCT,” Lee Soo-hyeon, head of the hospital’s robotic artificial joint surgery center, compared the results before and after surgery using Dr. LCT and existing system Robodoc in 50 cases each.

The biggest achievement in robotic surgery using Dr. LCT is the reduction of overall surgery time. Compared to Robodoc, the bone registration time was reduced from 8 minutes to 3 minutes and the time required for bone cutting was reduced from 24 minutes to 8 minutes, leading to an about 30 percent reduction in the total surgery time from 75 minutes to 54 minutes. The shorter surgical time led to a reduced risk of exposure to complications such as infection and neurovascular damage. Despite the reduced surgery time, there was no difference in surgical accuracy between Dr. LCT and Robodoc patient groups. The surgical accuracy was measured by the mechanical axis of the knee and the angle of implant insertion. In addition, both the Dr. LCT and Robodoc patient groups showed very favorable results in terms of pain and satisfaction based on the WOMAC SCORE.

LCT Hospital has clinically proven the safety and effectiveness of the Dr. LCT system through the analysis of surgical cases over the past year, said Yoon Sung-hwan, head of LCT Hospital.

LCT Hospital introduced Robodoc, an artificial joint surgery robot, for the first time in Korea in 2002. It holds many patents related to robotic artificial joint surgery through continuous research and development. Dr. LCT was developed by the hospital as a next-generation surgical robot in 2021.
