Kakao Brain Corp., an artificial intelligence company under South Korean internet giant Kakao, has taken the face-swapping technology to next level for digital human development.

Kakao Brain on Monday introduced its new face-swapping technology ¡®Smooth-Swap,¡¯ which enables more stable face swapping through identity imbedding.

Face swap is technology widely used in social media apps, like Tiktok and Snapchat, enabling app users to swap faces with another in real time.

Kakao Brain¡¯s Smooth-Swap is built on integrated identity embedder, thus significantly simplifying the system architecture, according to the company. Identity embedding is a vector representation of a face image used to compare identities, with two faces having close enough representation vectors regarded to have the same identity, explained the company.

The Smooth-Swap technology enables creation of high-quality images to facilitate the development of digital humans such as virtual show hosts and influencers.

Kakao Brain will present its face-swapping research paper, titled `Smooth-Swap: A Simple Enhancement for Face-Swapping with Smoothness,` at the Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) 2022, a global computer vision conference coming up next month. It will hold an exclusive oral presentation session for the second year in a row. Only the most outstanding papers among accepted articles are given the opportunity to make oral presentation at the CVPR.
