South Korea’s memory giant SK Hynix Inc. will be shipping out the industry’s largest-capacity mobile DRAM in 18GB (gigabyte) that can best serve multi-tasking and high-resolution videos on smartphones.

The LPDDR5 mobile DRAM runs at up to 6,400Mbps (megabits-per-second), about 20 percent faster than the mobile DRAM (LPDDR5 with 5,500Mbps) for existing smartphones in a data rate capable of processing ten full HD 5GB movies per second, the company said in a statement.

The company has mounted its first 18GB product onto the ASUS “Republic of Gamers” 5, a game dedicated phone from ASUS.

A company official said the new memory product will improve the processing speed and image quality by expanding the data temporary storage space as the capacity increases compared to the previous 16GB product.

The new mobile DRAM will be equipped in premium smartphones to support an optimal environment for high resolution game and video, the company said.

SK Hynix expects the new DRAM to be applied to more technology solutions including ultra-high-performance camera apps and artificial intelligence (AI).

According to market tracker Omdia, LPDDR5 DRAMs make up for about one tenth of the entire DRAM market, and may surpass half by 2023 on rising demand for advanced electronics.
