South Korea¡¯s visual effects (VFX) technology company Dexter Studio claims its new LED technology can save film producers budget for high-quality computer-generated (CG) imagery.

Dexter Studio¡¯s new virtual production studio D1 uses light-emitting diode (LED) walls to create CG backgrounds for films, overcoming some disadvantages of traditional green screen. The technology allows directors to shoot and adjust CG backgrounds simultaneously, removing the need for post-production. It also helps actors fully immerse themselves in their roles as they can watch the backgrounds while acting.

Dexter Studio CEO Kim Wook said the technology would cut production cost by around 30 percent, allowing producers to recollect initial investments when they produce two to three films.

Dexter Studio was founded in 2011 by film director Kim Yong-hwa. The production house is behind ¡°Along with the Gods¡± series, ¡°Ashfall,¡± and ¡°Escape from Mogadishu¡± and developed visual effects of ¡°Believer,¡± ¡°The Battle: Roar to Victory,¡± ¡°Parasite¡± and ¡°Space Sweepers.¡±

The studio partners with U.S. virtual production studio Lux Machina behind ¡°The Mandalorian¡± serviced at Disney+ as well as filming equipment maker Arri and game developer Epic Games.

Kim said the company will add more studios such as D2 and D3 which will be applied with much advanced technology. He said virtual production studios hold great potential as it could create synergy with future-promising technologies such as metaverse and non-fungible token (NFT).
