SK Telecom will launch the world`s first edge cloud service based on 5G Mobile Edge Computing (MEC) within this year through partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS), said an SK Telecom official on Wednesday.

In a keynote speech at the AWS Summit Online Korea, Yoo Young-sang, head of SK Telecom`s MNO business division, unveiled the plan to respond fast market dynamics toward cloud-based solutions.

AWS is the world`s largest provider of cloud computing services. 5G edge cloud is a distributed cloud service with cloud data centers at exchanges and base stations to reduce the physical time and distance required to process mobile data at the edge of the network. MEC is a technology that provides cloud and IT services within proximity of mobile subscribers to enable ultra-low latency.

SK Telecom will apply AWS Wavelength and shared public edge cloud technologies and services to its own 5G MEC technology, which the company said will reduce a data transmission delay by up to 60 percent.
