Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction has joined an ambitious state-led venture on hydrogen generation and storage based on wind power in the Jeju Island.

Doosan Heavy Industries announced on Wednesday it has signed a task agreement on a project for the production, storage and utilization of green hydrogen organized by Jeju Energy Corporation and supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy and Korea Energy Technology Evaluation and Planning.

The test bed project is joined by 10 organizations and businesses including Jeju Provincial Government, Korea Midland Power, and Korea Gas Corporation.

Under the agreement, the project will be carried out in Dongbuk and Bukchon wind farms owned by Jeju Energy Corporation.

Doosan Heavy Industries are responsible for integrated design and supervision of hydrogen plants for hydrogen production, compression and storage. It will also develop an energy management system (EMS).

The project will cost about 20 billion won ($18 million) with a term until December 2022. Hydrogen to be generated here will be used to power hydrogen buses to be introduced to Jeju in the future.

Hydrogen can be produced through by-products from petrochemical processing, natural gas control and water electrolysis. Hydrogen generated from water electrolysis using electricity from renewable energy such as wind power is called green hydrogen as there are no carbon emissions in the process.
