Naver Labs, the R&D arm of South Korean internet giant Naver Corporation, has unveiled its A-CITY project to make a precision roadmap, refine localization technology and other solutions to support self-driving vehicles across Seoul.

The three-year project aims to create an automatic urban environment where various types of machines move themselves to create a new connection in the urban space and artificial intelligence and robots collect, analyze and predict spatial data, said Seok Sang-ok, head of Naver Labs on Tuesday.

Naver Labs plans to build a 2,000 km layout map to cover major roads with more than four lanes of the capital city by updating its hybrid HD mapping solution within this year and refine its localization technology for autonomous driving. The localization technology will be sophisticated enough to get a distance in 10 cm seamlessly through the combination of HD Map, GPS, Wheel Encoder, LiDAR, and camera sensors.

NaverLabs said it has completed development of all necessary technology for Level 4 autonomous driving such as ultra-precise mapping solution, accurate localization, driving environment recognition and prediction through sensor combination, route planning and control.
