KT and SKT sweep honors at 2019 5G World Award

KT Corp. and SK Telecom, South Korea¡¯s leading mobile carrier that were first to roll out commercial 5G service, swept global awards for raising the bar in wireless technology.

KT said on Thursday that it won awards in four categories including Best 5G Commercial Launch in recognition of its leadership in the world¡¯s first commercial 5G service in Korea during the 5G World Award 2019 held in London on Wednesday (local time).

At the awards ceremony, KT also received the best service innovation award for 5G communication service "Real360", the best network automation technology award ¡°Dr. Lauren¡± and the best innovative 5G trial award for "5G Remote Cockpit."

Real360 is the company¡¯s real-time 5G communication service that allows users to share images in three dimensions under any environment using a 360-degree camera. "Dr. Lauren" is an AI failure-cause analysis solution that analyzes network-operating big data with artificial intelligence technology to determine the cause in case of network failure within a minute. 5G Remote Cockpit designed to ensure safety of a self-driving vehicle with a real time remote control system in an emergency situation.

At the same award ceremony, SK Telecom won the best edge computing technology award for its 5G mobile edge computing (MEC) which can reduce communication latency by up to 60 percent through an MEC-based small data center between base stations and exchanges.

Korea`s biggest mobile carrier SKT was recognized at the 5G World Award for three years in a row. It received awards for the world¡¯s first 5G connected car T5 in 2017 and network management technology TANGO and T-MANO last year.

The 5G World Award organized by ICT research institute Informa Telecoms & Media select companies and services that have achieved the best performance and innovation in the world in 14 areas, including communication technology, network control technology and security technology.
