South Korea¡¯s leading auto parts maker Hyundai Mobis Co. developed an advanced adoptive driving beam (AADB) for the first time in the world, a higher-performing version than the existing ADB system mostly found in upscale vehicles.

The auto component making unit under the country¡¯s top automaker Hyundai Motor Group said that its new headlamp system enables safer driving with more accurate light distribution after processing data on cars coming behind or in the opposite direction from various sensors and cameras. The AADB system addresses common drawbacks of the earlier ADB that has limits in detecting cars from behind or in curved roads.

The new system would be especially useful for autonomous vehicles as it can discern road signs and objects on the road even in darkness. Hyundai Mobis said the AADB has competitiveness in price as well because it has been upgraded with software not through hardware makeover. It filed six patents related to the system in Korea and 12 overseas.

Hyundai Mobis is a rare edge as a parts maker with capabilities snapping from cameras to blind-spot collision warning (BCW), headlamp and auto navigation system. Few headlight manufacturers in the world have comprehensive technology including sensors and advanced driver assistant system (ADAS).

¡°The headlamp performance improvement is only made possible with the understanding of various technologies, so it would not be easy for global headlamp makers to catch up with Hyundai Mobis in a short period of time,¡± said Mirco Goetz, the company¡¯s lamp engineering director.

Hyundai Mobis has secured more than $3.4 billion worth headlamp orders since 2010.

On Friday, shares of Hyundai Mobis rose 3.01 percent to close at 188,000 won.
