YouTube, the world¡¯s largest video streaming site, has received more than 260,000 cases of correction requests from Korea¡¯s major broadcasting networks due to its copyright infringement since last year, showing a stark contrast to smaller Korean platform rivals such as Naver, Daum and Afreeca TV.

According to Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC) data submitted to the National Assembly on Thursday, KBS, MBC and SBS have requested correction of 261,042 cases of copyright infringement on YouTube since last year. The figure is 66 times higher than the 3,979 cases of corresponding requests toward the country¡¯s top video streaming platforms - Naver, Daum and Afreeca TV.

By network, KBS requested YouTube to remove 126,570 videos between last year and the end of September this year, while it did the same to Naver and Daum to remove 658 videos. Such requests from MBC to YouTube filed between last year and the end of June were 53,387 cases, 104 times higher versus 512 cases in Naver and Daum. SBS detected 81,085 cases of copyright violations on YouTube between last year and the end of September this year, and 2,809 cases from the three Korean video streaming platforms.

Last month, the European Parliament adopted a draft bill to impose accountability on YouTube and Facebook to prevent content creators from violating copyrights and to remove infringed content automatically.

"YouTube is abusing its dominant position and disturbing the market order by taking advantage of the situation where no regulations are in place. We will come up with related laws to force a market order," said Rep. Noh Woong-rae of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea.
