A consortium led by KT Corp. has commenced the process to build the so-called Cooperative-Intelligent Transport Systems (C-ITS) in Jeju, which is expected to boost traffic situational awareness in driving and reduce traffic accidents across the island.

To realize this system, the South Korean telecom giant said on Wednesday it will set up a vehicle-to-everything (V2X) communication infrastructure by combining LTE (Long-Term Evolution) and WAVE (Wireless Access in Vehicular Environment) networks. V2X communication enables the passing of information from a vehicle to any entity that may affect the vehicle, and vice versa. The company will also develop an LTE-based precision location solution to create a map with less than 30cm in error range.

The project worth 22 billion won ($19.4 million) will last until 2020. It marks the country¡¯s first full-fledged introduction of such a system, whose usefulness was verified through a pilot program in Daejeon and Sejong cities.

Other consortium members are Vitzrosys, Kwang Myung D&C and SD System. Upon completion, KT will initially distribute C-ITS terminals to rental cars.

The C-ITS project is part of the local government¡¯s plan to turn Jeju into a smart traffic city and will create an opportunity for KT to provide telecom-based traffic services and to promote mutual growth between large and small companies, KT said.
