South Korea’s wireless carrier LG Uplus Corp. has teamed up with the country’s leading construction equipment maker Doosan Infracore Co. to develop an autonomous construction system.

LG Uplus said Tuesday that it signed a memorandum of understanding with Doosan Infracore to cooperate on developing a 5G network based smart construction system. Through their tech partnership, they plan to build construction equipment that performs tasks on its own and can be remotely controlled using the latest technology such as 5G network, high-performing video transmission and sensors.

As a start, they aim to complete designing smart construction equipment and test run the system by the end of this year and incorporate it with greater work areas like surveying construction site with drones and construction site management next year.

Autonomous construction equipment is a system connected through a 5G network that performs various tasks ranging from monitoring construction site works through drones to comparing work progress against plan and automatically adjusting task as well as performing necessary tasks based on changed order, according to the company.
