South Korea¡¯s wireless carrier KT Corp. has teamed up with U.S.-based global communications equipment maker Intel Corp. to showcase the fifth-generation (5G) wireless technology for the first time in the world at the Pyeongchang 2018 Winter Olympics to be held in Pyeongchang, Gangwon Province next year.

KT and Intel said at a press conference in Seoul on Tuesday that they would jointly provide the world¡¯s first 5G trial services during the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

Under the partnership, KT provides 5G network and technologies, and Intel connects the service with smart devices like ultra-high definition cameras. The two companies together will hold a 5G experience event at the KT promotion hall of Gangneung Olympic Park in Gangneung, where various 5G technologies including virtual reality (VR) will also be displayed.

The two have worked together to define the standard of 5G as the members of the 5G Special Interest Group (5G SIG) that also includes Samsung Electronics and Qualcomm

KT plans to initiate commercial service of 5G in 2019.
