South Korea¡¯s SK C&C Co. said on Thursday that it has signed a contract with Lotte Aluminum and Choil Aluminum to build a ¡®Digital Carbon Passport¡¯ platform. The platform created by SK C&C to comprehensively support carbon management in product manufacturing resulted from a collaboration with Glassdome, a U.S.-based startup for carbon emission management solutions.

Lotte Aluminum specializes in producing aluminum foils related to the capacity and voltage of secondary batteries, while Choil Aluminum supplies raw materials for aluminum foil production. Both companies are integral parts of the global secondary battery supply chain and are subject to the European Union¡¯s Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and battery regulations.

Through the contract for the Digital Carbon Passport platform, the companies will become the first in the industry to establish a management system that measures and monitors not only direct and indirect carbon emissions (Scope 1,2) in the production process but also the carbon emissions of the raw material supplier (Scope 3), according to SK C&C.

Specifically, SK C&C will build a platform to facilitate the carbon emission reporting obligations of CBAM, which imposes tariffs on carbon emissions for six major categories, including steel, aluminum, fertilizer, electricity, cement, and hydrogen products. The platform will streamline the reporting process for the product carbon footprint (PCF) and Digital Battery Passport (DBP), addressing additional carbon management regulations introduced by the EU.
