South Korea’s Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co. (DSME) has completed building the second 1,400-ton submarine for the Indonesian Navy under a contract signed in 2011 for a fleet of three diesel-powered submarines.

DSME said on Thursday that it has held a delivery and commissioning ceremony for Ardadedali, the second of the three orders the shipbuilder won in Korea’s maiden submarine export.

The ceremony was held at DSME’s shipyard in Okpo, Geoje, South Gyeongsang Province, in the presence of about 100 guests including Indonesia’s Defense Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu and DSME President Jung Sung-leep.

The first submarine was delivered in August, last year.

According to DSME, Ardadedali, which was built based on technology handed down by Germany in 1988, is the first indigenously-developed submarine designed for export. The 1,400 ton submarine is 61 meters long and can house 40 crews. It can operate 10,000 nautical miles or 18,520 kilometers, which is a non-stop round trip from Busan Port to Los Angeles Port in the United States through maximized underwater operation capacity.

The three submarines with operational life of at least 30 years will manage maritime security and protect territorial sea of Indonesia.

DSME President Jung said at the delivery ceremony that the building of the latest submarine has proved the company’s competitiveness as the country’s sole submarine exporter. He said that DSME will put out efforts to enhance Korea’s naval power based on such technical skills and also contribute to Indonesian Navy’s plan to increase its underwater military strength.
