Samsung Electronics Co. and leading U.K. communications infrastructure company Arqiva successfully demonstrated 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technology, which will allow ultrafast transmission of massive file using wireless mobile network, in central London on Tuesday (local time).

FWA technology is touted as the next-generation broadband solution, but its wireless-based technology has marred its performance. With Samsung Electronics¡¯ 5G mobile network unit, the FWA has, however, proved its potential to be an alternative to fixed line broadband service, the Korean tech giant said in a statement on Tuesday.

For the field trial, Samsung Electronics has provided a compact access unit composed of a radio access unit, customer premises equipment (CPE) that is a router, and virtualized core for managing user connections and data routing from Arqiva¡¯s 28GHz millimeter wave (mmWave) spectrum network to the internet.

Samsung¡¯s 5G access unit and CPE are compact and easy to install, said the company. Its CPE can be mounted on lamppost or other street fixtures to provide 5G mobile connection to homes and businesses.

Arqiva¡¯s CEO Simon Beresford-Wylie raved the new wireless broadband technology saying ¡°Samsung will showcase not only 5G FWA¡¯s potential for delivering ultrafast broadband but also the value of the 28GHz band in helping achieve this.¡±

In February, two companies inked an agreement on carrying out the U.K.¡¯s first trial of the 5G FWA technology, and the field test will run for over the next four months. During the field trial, Samsung and Arqiva will demonstrate whether their wireless broadband system will allow smooth streaming service of more than 25 UHD 4K TV channels.
