The world¡¯s leading TV maker Samsung Electronics Co. is invading the silver screen market still dominated by traditional film projectors, with its top-class digital TV display technology and audio technology from Harman International Industries Inc. that the Korean tech giant recently acquired.

Samsung Electronics on Monday unveiled its new Samsung Cinema Screen, the world¡¯s first light-emitting diode (LED) theater display using high dynamic range (HDR) technology timed with this year¡¯s CinemaCon, the largest annual trade show for movie studios and theater owners from around the world that will be held between March 27 and 30 in Las Vegas.

The Korean tech giant¡¯s cinema screen is a 34-foot by 18-foot display capable of delivering LED picture quality at 4K (4,096 x 2,160 pixels) resolution, which also meets the widely-accepted digital cinema initiatives (DCI) specifications that ensure uniform technical performance, reliability and quality in digital cinema.

Samsung Electronics hopes its latest cinema screen can reform the theater screen market that has been commanded by conventional cinema projectors for over 120 years of the film history.

¡°The launch of our cinema LED display is merely the latest step toward our vision for a complete end-to-end theater experience powered by digital signage,¡± said Seog-gi Kim, Senior Vice President of Visual Display Business at Samsung.

Thanks to its direct-lit LED technology, the cinema screen delivers HDR to the cinema, showcasing on-screen contents at a peak brightness level nearly 10 times greater than standard cinema projectors, achieving 146 foot-lamberts (fL) compared to 14 fL, the company claimed.

Samsung also worked together with Harman Professional Solutions¡¯ cinema group to incorporate an innovative audio solution, which delivers even, quality movie sound, to its new cinema screen. Harman Professional Solutions is the world¡¯s leading audio, video and lighting system making arm of Harman International Industries that Samsung has recently taken over.

The firm plans to test out its new cinema screen across theaters at home and in the U.S. in the second half in advance of a worldwide official launch by year-end.
