The South Korean Ministry of Government Legislation (MOLEG) will support Myanmar to establish a law information system in hopes that the latest project would expedite export of the country’s legal system to other Asian countries. This is also part of official development assistance (ODA) projects Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA).

The law information system is a legal database management system designed to give individuals and companies an easier access to legal information. The Korean law information system, managed by the MOLEG, is regarded as highly advanced in every aspect including the quality and quantity of information and search capability.

The MOLEG will first help the Myanmar government to establish mid- to long-term plans to develop its own legislative system. It will go on to support the country to build a database of the legislation and provide additional help in maintenance such as installing a search engine and developing programs until the system is completely set up.

The project is part of the so-called ‘K-Legislation’ program that the Korean government has been carrying out to export Korea’s advanced legal system to provide support for other developing countries such as Vietnam to set up their own law information system.

Minister Je Jeong-boo of the MOLEG visited the South East Asian country last Friday to meet with Tun Tun Hein, chair of the Bill Committee of Myanmar’s Lower House to discuss ways for successful implementation of the Myanmar law information system. Je also met with Myanmar’s justice minister Htun Htun Oo to reaffirm their commitment to doing their utmost to establish and implement the system as soon as possible.

“We look forward to the successful system laying the foundation for economic development through democratization and the vision of Myanmar’s new government,” Je said.

Htun Htun Oo responded, “Once the system is in place, the people of Myanmar will be able to easily access the increasing number of laws in accordance with our ‘Rule of Law’ policy.”
