Yonsei University hospital to build medical AI tech R&D center

South Korea¡¯s major general hospital Yonsei University Health System will build a medical artificial intelligence (AI) technology research center in the country, hoping its center can foster the advancement in medical AI technology in Korea.

According to Gyeonggi provincial government, Yonsei University Health System signed an agreement with the provincial government and Yongin city office to build a medical AI research center in Yongin, Gyeonggi Province in Korea.

The medical AI research center will be added to Dongbaek Yonsei medical complex currently under construction on a site of 208,973 square meters in Giheung-gu in Yongin. Following the latest contract, Yongin City will be home to a large-sized hospital with 800 beds, a high-tech medical industrial complex and a medical AI research center.

Yonsei University Health System plans to establish the medical AI research center and infrastructure on a land of about 990 square meters in the medical complex to lead research on Korea¡¯s indigenous medical AI technology and provide related expert training.

AI technology in healthcare is used in analyzing medical data and checking the condition of patients to help the diagnosis of the medical team and recommend customized treatments. The healthcare AI market is expected to reach 6 trillion won ($5.6 billion) by 2020, according to Gyeonggi Province. Once the medical complex is built, 4,000 jobs will be created with 500 billion won worth economy.
